Even high end memory like Crucial have been shown to cause lockups. Even the sites that cater specifically to Mac users, like macsales.com who sell the OWC memory for $109.99 for a 4GB kit (so $10 more than Buy.com for comparable 4gb) have had some lockups. I guess it's advisable to buy the ram and keep the 2gb that comes in the Macbooks/Macbook Pros until you are sure it is OK. However, if you were to bring back the laptop to an Apple Store for repairs or something, make sure to put the old ram back in. They can and will void your warranty if you don't get "their" memory. |

I was previously a tech support rep for Apple (phone support, ugh) - anyway, Apple cannot and will not void the warranty on your whole machine if your 3rd party RAM goes bad. The only caveat is that if the RAM is bad, you gotta replace it (since its not Apple RAM). |

My blackbook is in service right now (dropped it on tile) and they mentioned that the RAM & HD were aftermarket so they wouldn't replace them, but they have no problems replacing the logic board and superdrive under warranty. I even told them I dropped it! I'm surrently using the aluminum macbook and also wndering about DDR3. Did they install 2 x1 or 1x2? |
