Just bought one! Thanks, OP!

Excellent! These HD camcorders (HF100, HG20) all lack viewfinder, so you for sure need another battery. HG21 has viewfinder I believe but that's $300 more.

Got one for our Christmas ski trip. Thanks.

How do you get extra 3 hrs battery?

I had a problem getting the battery to show up for free when I ordered my HG20 and the battery. Just call up customer service using the help links on Amazon, and the customer service dude did the order for me, and then changed the price of the battery to $0.

I am waiting for these to go down even more - saw one (not this brand but HD cam) on clearance at CC for 399.99 the other day.

I too will be waiting for the $399.99 magic price to show. Remember, this unit does not have a view finder. It will use double the battery life then one that does have a view finder! HD is the only way to go. Don't forget to also order a Blue Ray camcorder that records! You only want to record HD to Hd for the best picture quality! The Blue Rays should be coming down in price too! I love my Canon SLR Rebel XTI and I know that I will love a Canon which ever model camcorder???? Maybe, the 2009 Models when they come out with even more bells and whistles!

I was wondering about this myself - I want an HD camera but I do not have a Blu-Ray burner or player - so I wonder if any or all of the benefits would be lost if I transferred the recordings to DVD to view on HDTV - I assume so - so maybe I'm jumping the gun here. If you consider camcorder, blu ray burner, player, software etc. =$1000+ very easily so maybe waiting a year or two is better.

i am not positive about this but I will make a logical attempt.

1- you will eventually have a Blu-ray burner on your PC so you can shoot, download and store it on your PC, worst case scenario.
2- if your PC is connected to your television, you should be able to play it right from your PC onto your tv. if you have a PS3 or a streaming device you may also be able to stream it wirelessly through something like tversity.
3- memory cards? what if you can use and SD card to play video on your TV? not sure but it may be an option.
4- playing them directly from your camcorder to your tv. there must be a a way to connect it to your TV using an HDMI cable. and just playing it off there.

Storage will be cheap soon enough. I considered buying the HF100 or some other future technology storage built-into the camcorder. I also wanted a viewfinder. But at $589, along with a 2nd battery that lasts 3+ hours, I figured that the battery life wasn't a big deal. And, by the time I get to 50GB of video, blue-ray burners will be cheap enough (~$100), so I can burn raw footage to a 50GB Blueray disc (~$6). For now, I can back up my footage on an external HDD that has room.

I regularly use Canon GL2 3-ccd camcorders and a buddy showed me his Canon HD camcorder...the image was as crisp and clear(his model even had a longer zoom, no less)as my GL2s.
The OP's link is for a 12x zoom model.
So, even if you don't use the full capabilities of the HD right now, the image is gonna be the top knock-your-socks-off SD until you do.

And the price is great - a GL2 is still $2000+ !

I do not know how to add the extra battery for free. Can someone help. I called customer service and she said it is not free but $140 more.

Two things seem to have happened this morning. The price dropped to $544 and the link for the free battery disappeared. The free battery deal had been listed as valid through 11/29. Anyone know how to get the free battery?

$544? Where? It still shows $564 for me, with the free battery offer. Are you sure this is from Amazon.com and not another retailer?

The link in the OP leads me to the HG20 at $544 sold by Electronics Expo via Amazon.com. Doing a search on HG20 does not bring up any listings sold by Amazon.

And now it appears to be back...weird.

Price is now $560.84 and still has the free battery offer. I'm hoping the price will go lower before the free battery offer expires on the 29th!
