Shipping is not around $8, maybe if you are near the warehouse, but even then I doubt that.

Nice deal. But assuming the customer adds in enough memory, whats the best (most recent) OS can it be loaded with? Hey if it can run on XP i might just get it

Just remember, you're getting a $40 computer. You get what you pay for.

Shipping for me is $23 to Ohio. Shipping of over 57% the price of the product? Yeah...

Although I won't be buying it, it might be helpful to some people if someone could clarify if this is a Pentium 4 class Celeron or Pentium 3? Celerons have been around since the p2 era but they never name the chips Celeron II or III or whatever so you can never tell without looking it up (BTW am I the only one who things identifying a cpu's approximate power got REALLY confusing during the p3 era? We had AMD K6-III, Athlon, Athlon Thunderbird, Duron, Intel P3, Celeron, and who knows what else... and it's only gotten worse since).

Good alternative OS's would be Xubuntu, Fluxbuntu, Windows 2000, and if add more RAM or heavily trimmed things down you could run Windows XP at an acceptable speed. The Win 9x series has a bad reputation for security, and adding on anti virus/spyware/firewall is gonna slow this machine down, if you can even find someone who still makes products that support Win 9x. I think Avast antivirus still supports 9x but I'm not sure. If you're gonna use Win 98 my advice is:
-Avast for virus protection (if still supported). Alternatively Bitdefender or Clamwin if they support 9x, but you will not have realtime protection, only scanners. Or TrendMicro scanner but it's less user friendly:
http://www.TrendMicro.com/download/dcs.asp
http://www.TrendMicro.com/download/pattern.asp
this one sounds good but I've never used it:
http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/

-Spyware: might wanna forego realtime protection on a system with only 128 MB RAM. So use spywareblaster to prevent many spyware from being installed in the firstplace (uses no resources), and use scanner/removers such as spybot, ad-aware, superantispyware. Use Firefox as the browser, IE 6 is known for security holes

-firewall: again to save resources I would suggest using a hardware firewall (enable this in your wireless router). If you must have a software firewall Kerio 2.15 is known for low resource usage, but it will be annoying for the first week or so as it blocks everything outgoing and you'll have to check "always allow" for quite a few programs.

At least they could have upgraded it to 98 _SE_...

Nice deal. I still run a 900Mhz, 256MB, 160GB HD system. I run XP Pro, no problems, fast for internet surfing with Cable internet. The vast majority of people truly don't more than this system for everyday net surfing, word processing, downloading music, etc.
