As most of you already know, there's a Roku player which allows you to watch Netflix instant on your television. There is no extra monthly charge for this, but you have to buy the Roku player which costs $99 + shipping + extra for cables...it ends up costing near $120.

Another viable option for this is to watch Netflix instantly when it's available on Xbox 360 Live this fall. However, to view this you need an Xbox 360 + the Live gold subscription which is another annual fee to pay.

HOWEVER, now there's an option for PS3 called PlayOn and for now, it's free for 45 days while in Beta. After that, it's only $30 to buy the software and then you're covered and can watch Netflix on your PS3. I tried it last night and it works pretty well. I was able to catch up on The Office from previous seasons.

To make this deal work, you will need to sign up for Netflix service if you don't already have it. There's a free trial period, so nothing to lose if it doesn't work for you.

Once you have that, you will need to download the software. The software is easy to install and turns your PC into a media server for your PS3. It does require a broadband connection to work of course.

You can get the software here:
PlayOn! Software

From the site, here's their blurb:

PlayOn enables consumers who own a PLAYSTATION 3, Xbox 360, or HP MediaSmart TV to access content from sites including Netflix, Hulu, CBS, YouTube, ESPN and more on their television. We have just released PlayOn Beta, and the fully featured release will be coming shortly!

We will also be adding support for Nintendo Wii by the end of 2008. Stay tuned!

In my opinion, this is a GREAT deal since it saved me $90 I had planned to spend!

That was just my test show.

They don't have all seasons available do they?

I'm worried that Time Warner will impose those limits on the Internet too. I hope not. I know they are testing.

It works with Hulu as well.

Excellent find! I have been waiting for November to come around... but this option sounds a lot better without the need to subscribe to live.

I'll try it out in the morning.

Thanks OP! Green for you.

There was some talk earlier this year about Netflix doing something for the PS3...this may be obsolete in a few months, but I have at least 45 days to try to find out if there is something else coming for PS3 / Netflix.

I covered this in my last podcast...also works with the Popcorn Hour. You can see a video of it in action here: Netflix/Hulu on Popcorn Hour

If you have any questions, let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

Make note that it does not support anything in HD yet (maybe Netflix, but I don't have it). This $30 software would sure be worth it if it could stream the Hulu service in HD! Since it does not, the quality is not so great on a 42"+ tv.

Not as great as the versions posted on nbc.com, but they are all there and without commercials.

No HD content on Netflix yet, no plans announced. Is there HD content on Hulu? I know they have two quality tiers, but I didn't think either of them was over 720x480.

This thread is by no means a hot deal, even if it's useful information (that a lot of us already knew). There is no discount to speak of here, just a new for-fee software product being sold at its maximum price.
