Sorry but cat6 is the way to go. Cat5e is old and no longer valid in this day and age.

It is completely valid. You will not notice any difference in performance at all. Cat5e is rated for 10mbps, 100mbps and 1000mbps.

Are you joking the average user doesn't needs wire that supports such high speeds:

CAT5e wiring is now considered the standard, and uses somewhat higher gauge wires. This enables the reliable transmission of data at Gigabit speeds (1000 Mb/sec), used by newer LANs. CAT5e is also more reliable than CAT5 over longer distances. In general, Gigabit data transmission speeds can transmit 100 simultaneous DVD quality video streams.

CAT6 wiring uses even higher gauge wires. It is preferable for standard 250 Mb/sec data speeds (and Gigabit adaptations). It is suitable for long wire runs for 250 Mb/sec (or Gigabit) data speeds. It is preferred over CAT5e for 10 Gigabit data transmission speeds (which is not currently very common in home and small office LANs).

truth be told. I still use cat 5.
It's still faster than wireless in most situations.

www.monoprice.com has cheap everything all the time. 14ft cat 5 any color $1.70 plus shipping. If your buying a couple of cables then getting them here will be cheaper. Need HDMI cables, always cheap!

actually if you plan to use consumer grade cat6 you need cat6a. unless you are patching small runs.

consumer grade (ie monoprice) is less quality for long runs.

go wikipedia cat6 and you'll see the full spec. might as well get a good quality cat6a if you are wiring a house up so when you can afford 10gbe you can actually have a reliable long haul.

 

also check out flat cat5e i got 50ft for $13; it is 1mm thick and flat. great for windows/doors/up walls/etc. slick stuff

Thanks for the tip! I'm not sure why the thread was bumped, but I'm grateful. I'd never been to monoprice before and ended up finding a few other little things I needed, along with a new ethernet cable.
