California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced that he has reached a settlement with Citibank after a three-year investigation into the company’s use of an illegal “account sweeping” program. Nationally, the company took more than $14 million from its customers, including $1.6 million from California residents, through the use of a computer program that wrongfully swept positive account balances from credit-card customer accounts into Citibank’s general fund.

they took my red swingline too.

wow that is really shady...I'm questioning whether I should continue using citibank as my main bank anymore.

Unbelievable!

You are referring to the fact that an attorney got a settlement that actually benefits the victims?!?!?

All of the affected accounts were in a recovery status, which includes accounts of customers who have died, sought bankruptcy protection, or been the target of litigation or other collection efforts by Citibank.

I'm surprised none of FW's conservative trolls have chimed in yet to say that it was their own fault for not being more responsible.

No, that's the jar. I'm talking about the tray, the pennies for everybody.

That's why we want to always end the billing period with 99 cents balance on Citi cards.

I read the thread title and was actually thinking "Yea, I had a credit balance removed!"

I had a 42 cent overpayment that stayed on the account for a bit and after 3 months, they removed it and coded it as "BALANCE REMOVED DUE TO 3 MOS INACTIVITY"

Similar here. They removed my 25 cents which is a refund from Google.

Definitely explains why Citi has been generally happy to accept BTs that create a positive balance (positive from their perspective).

It just goes to show you, if everybody gave me just a little bit of money, I could retire quite rich. This is a job for Superman!

Seriously, I have made much more money from my 0% citi money than they'd ever be able to make back by sweeping my credit balances. I won't be pressing charges.

What do you guys think Citi's general rule is? Anything less than $1 magically vanishes, but everything else above generates an automated credit balance refund check after 3 months.

dude banks have been doing this forever. not just citi. i think AMEX is one of the few who send me .50 cent checks from various credits. everyone else "charges it to the game".

i will await my settlement letter to add to the stack.

I don't think it would affect most of us (although there are a few posters that seem brain-dead if that counts)

The credit sweeps targeted more than 53,000 customers nationwide. All of the affected accounts were in a recovery status, which includes accounts of customers who have died, sought bankruptcy protection, or been the target of litigation or other collection efforts by Citibank.

"“Stealing from our customers is a business decision, not a legal decision.” The same executive later said that the sweep program could not be stopped because it would reduce the executive bonus pool."

so ballsy, yet so stupid at the same time.

They took my credit ($0.29?) from buying a google video which was only purchased to get 1k Thankyou points anyway. I figured it was more fair than me calling in to complain!

I had a $1 credit on a Barclays card for about 2 months, I just received a check for it in the mail yesterday! Maybe they got word of the outcome of this suit, Yippee!
