Howdy.

I see that there's a new attachment feature. However, there's at least one major problem.

If you're in Classic mode, and someone attached a file, it does not show up at all in Classic. Ok, so maybe there's some kind of incompatibility between Modern and Classic that doesn't allow the attachment to be downloaded, I have no idea. It just seems odd that nothing at all shows up, and kind of makes the OP look like an idiot when they say "Look what I found" and then it's just blank.

So, if FW coders can't display attachments in Classic (and maybe you can, I'm just giving the benefit of the doubt), could you at least make *something* show up so that people know that a file attachment is there while in Classic view, something that indicates that they will have to switch to Modern to see the file?

Thanks.

Long live Modern view! /evil laugh/

Attachments don't show when you use the quote feature. And they don't show in .mobi eaither. So imo they are less useful than the traditional links.

I can't even get it to work in Modern. I click the button after selecting images from my computer, and nothing happens. Using MSN Explorer.

Pyeed to ETA: Does not work in IE&, upload button goes nowhere.

Pyeed to further add: Did work using Firefox. apparently does not work using IE7 or it's equivalent, MSN Explorer.

Why can't we upload XLS files?

The way around that is to upload as ".txt", w/ instructions to dloaders to change the extension to ".xls".

I bet FW did it because malicious code can be inserted in .xls files.

Okay, it *should* be working now. Could you let us know if you're still having a problem?

Risk of infection from an XLS file is very low, and I'm sure FW already has legal language in place indicating that downloads are at your own risk. XLS files would be very useful in FWF.

Since the number of XLS files posted will probably be very limited, why not have an automatic mod review of all new XLS attachments if you're concerned about security?

And infect the mod machines with some Excel worm?

If you want to post stuff for Excel, save it in CSV format as a TXT file.

I suppose I'll just have to continue hosting my own worm-ridden XLS files and linking to them instead of attaching them, that's much safer.

We'll work something out; please don't despair

I heard somewhere text files can be deadly, too.

Excel files are now allowed. Please let us know any further issues, concerns, and requests regarding attachments (and images). Should also be working in both Modern and Classic, btw.

Thanks!

All these attachment enhancements are nice!

Only issue I have w/ Excel files is that their properties often contain the author's name and the name of the person who last saved the file. That may compromise anonymity. The author's name can be changed (File, Properties, Summary, Author), but I don't know how to change the contents of "Last saved by" field (Properties - Statistics).

Is there a workaround to make private the identity of the person who last saved a spreadsheet? A n00b (or not-so-n00b) may not realize that when he posts a spreadsheet he just shared his real name with the rest of the world.

The information displayed in "last saved by" is kept by Word. Go to Tools -> Options -> User Information. The change will affect all Office documents.

BRAVO! I did not know this.

Ideally, the forum would pop up a message about this when a user attempts to attach a spreadsheet, lest unsuspecting users reveal their identities.
