I was in my local Circuit City (ABQ - Cottonwood) on Friday.

They had racks and racks of the eMusic "Starter Packs" for sale at a new regular price of $4.98. These are the boxes that are hard-labelled [by eMusic] as $14.99 on the outside.

Historically, the BEST you have been able to get these for on eBay was $5.00 or so, and that was rare... the haven't been available often, and they usually go for ~$10 or so.

The details as I know them : there's a card in the box with a code. Once the code is entered onto the eMusic site, you have 60 days to download the songs.

While this deal is not as spectacular as the $5 junky mp3 player that came with a 180-song year-long 15 song/month subscription available about this time last year, it is a healthy price drop from the $14.99 Circuit City was selling this for recently.

The only eMusic entry available at CircuitCity.com is a $9.99 gift card good for 20 songs. Again highlighting that this could be valuable if you are an eMusic fan.

Also, considering their subscription model, this card-based solution may be the best way to go :

Q: What subscription programs does eMusic offer?

A: eMusic offers three low priced subscription plans.

eMusic Basic

30 Song Downloads per month
$11.99 per month

eMusic Plus

50 Song Downloads per month
$14.99 per month

eMusic Premium

75 Song Downloads per month
$19.99 per month

Downsides :

you only have the 60 days to "buy" the songs. Any unused tracks from the card not purchased by the expiriation are lost. [However, once you "buy" the tracks, they remain in your account and they can be re-downloaded any number of times, in case you lose them (or your HDD, which has probably happened to most of us).]
The songs on eMusic are DRM-free mp3's.

And, of course, all the standard eMusic caveats apply - there's little to no mainstream pop music, probably no "big-label" acts. However, there it is an indie-music haven. A lot of Canadian acts - you can find a good chunk of the playlist featured on XM52 (The Verge) on eMusic.

A number of the "bigger" acts on eMusic : Arcade Fire, Conor Oberst, the new John Mellencamp album, a good chunk of the James McMurtry catalog, My Morning Jacket. Not to mention the majority of the catalog of old friends and personal faves - Stroke 9 from SF. Plus Paul Durham/Black Lab.

There is also a significant comedy catalog : a LOT of the George Carlin catalog for example, both Mitch Hedberg cd's, Joe Rogan's latest cd, Mitch Fatel's latest, and so on.

However, the catalog completion is inconsistent - many artists have some cd's available but not others. For example, there are two previous Elliott Brood cd's, but the most recent one for a month or two back has not shown up yet.

The bottom line - if you're familiar with eMusic, you probably know if it suits your tastes or not, and this is probably a deal you can benefit from. If you're not familiar with it, you should probably check out one of the trials (this one seems to be the best current one : http://www.emusic.com/sunfest). That way you can keep free music and try it out with spending anything.

If you a fan of a little more obscure music, I hope you find this deal helpful.

**Edited to expire deal on 10/1/08.

Deal now appears to be dead... your Circuit City may still have these on display, and at this price, but the cards show up as "expired" when entered into the emusic website.

Nice effort on your detailed description.. thanks muchly.

I've been a happy emusic subscriber for awhile now. I've found a ton of indie and smaller label bands that I never would have known about without it. Their downloading software couldn't be easier to use, and of course, everything is DRM-free MP3 encoded.

Cool, thanks OP, I'll have to go check this out. You can always go into eMusic and check out items and save them for later (that's generally what I do when I hunt for music I want to download.) Now I'll just need to make sure I have at least 65 tracks worth of stuff queued up before I apply the card.

Do the cards have an expiration date by when it needs to be used on the site? (I know the cards that came with those MP3 players had a hard expiration date on them after which they would no longer be usable.)

I can't verify whether these have an expiration date on them or not. All of the ones I've ever gotten I've acitvated quickly and then used the tracks up over the next 60 days. Typically the ones that are listed on eBay state something to the effect of "you have a year to activate the code and then 60 days to download". I don't know if these are precisely the same cards that the sellers use though. I've done quite a number of these cards but honestly don't recall if there was an expiration date on them.

Yet, I do know the codes that came with the mp3 players did have expiration dates. However, I was not able to get any of those on the first pass (last Thanksgiving, I think). I ended up finding some early in 2008 (after the expiration date had passed... although you wouldn't know that since the expiration date was only listed on the inside), yet the codes I got still activated without a problem even though they were "expired". I don't know if that was an anomaly or not.

If I get a chance to pick up some of these cards, I'll post if there's an expiration or not. Please feel free to do the same if you get there first.

Yeah, I'll definitely post any information that I find. Good that you were still able to use the codes after the expiration on the MP3 players. Frankly I don't know how they can enforce those expiration dates when there's nothing on the external packaging that indicates there's an expiration.

The reason I ask on the cards is that I was planning on using them as stocking stuffers this year and didn't want them expiring before they could be used.

The lack of an external expiration was exactly what I would have argued had the code been rejected. I didn't really care about the mp3 player, but I purchased the bundle for the eMusic card only.

Since I didn't get any on the first pass, but I knew from the thread here that they expired, I was leary about it when I found one months later. But I tried it and it went through, so I was pleased. I found three more a bit later at another CC and they went through as well. I hadn't seen any bundles since February until I found one on a clearance table in June or July. However, interestingly the price was up to $15 or $20 or something, so I passed. It was a great deal, but the 15 tracks/month was a hindrance. Especially when you could occasionally find these 65-packs on eBay to shore up the lean months.

I have a couple of those codes remaining at present, which is why I didn't jump on this on Friday when I saw them.... well that and the long line at this (notoriously S-L-O-W) Circuit City. I think I would like to go by and pick at least one up to see about the expiration date, and if there isn't one, or it's pretty extended, I'll probably pick up a bunch, to keep the music flowing once the subscriptions (from the mp3 bundles) expire in Jan/Feb.

Then again, I'm probably going to canx my XM in December, in which case, I won't have that steady stream of indie tracks to acquire either, so who knows....

Anyway, I realize it's not for everybody, but eMusic HAS been really good to me this year with a lot of good music... Loaded up on a bunch of Rolling Stones tracks for the week or so they were available before they got pulled.... Rolling Stones’ Catalogue Pulled From eMusic

Well, good news/bad news regarding my trip to CC.

These boxes are a little different from the ones I'm used to...

These actually do have some verbiage on the outside of the box : "Product expiration date 04/01/08. Product non-refundable."

That said, I bought one anyway, and interestingly, there was no tax, but a 1 cent fee for "downloadable content", bring the total to $4.99 out the door.

The code did activate immediately, and added 65 songs to my account.

I think if they ever do get rejected, you'd have a pretty solid case for returning it to CC, but I wouldn't want to load up on them and try to return them at some far date in the future...

So... it's probably not as great a deal as it first appeared, unless you see a gazillion tracks you want to download TODAY. Otherwise, there is some risk involved.

Yet, I probably will go back and grab a handful the next time I go by... my experience(s) with eMusic have been really good, and I expect they'd probably treat you right... at least that's the gamble I'll make.

I wish well to other others interested in the deal... good luck!

I'm on my 4th card now and have a 5th standing by. eMusic is very good IF you like Indie, Folk, and Blues. At least in my opinion. Per eMusic you have 60 days to download the 65 songs. In my experience, I believe that will be the case. After that you'll be out of luck. I wondered whether I'd be able to use these after discovering them a month ago for same price at CC. I had just cancelled my eMusic account after learning they'd been charging me $10/month for 4 months for audiobooks. That was my fault but still pissed me off. I should have read the fine print closer on the trial membership. I'd recommend these but please all Austin buyers let me stock up once more before you hit the local CC stores! Good luck!

love emusic, no cards at cc near me

Dropped by CC on my way back from work. They had tons of the cards available (they were on an endcap near the register in the video games section, and they also had a rack setup near the video games where they had them out as well.) On the back of the box it does say something like card expiration is 04/01/08, but I'll take it up with my credit card company if these things fail to activate on eMusic.

Thanks OP. This thread reminded me to go finish downloading the last of my 15 tracks for this month from the mp3 player deal last summer. Had 8 tracks that would have expired tomorrow.

emusic has given my email address to spammers. I bought four of those RCA MP3 player/180 free download packages last year. I created four new email addresses that I only used for the emusic accounts. All four of them started getting spam within days. It has since slowed down, but I'm glad I didn't use my regular email address.

That said, emusic has a huge selection of music (although none of the more popular, modern artists), and for less than eight cents/song, this is a great deal.

Sorry to hear that... I read a similar story (perhaps also yours) in another emusic thread previously...

I guess I've been lucky in that regard. I set up two email accounts (also for the mp3 player deal earlier in the year), before I realized that you could put the cards on the same account (oh well...), and never saw a spike in spam. Perhaps gmail just filters it, I don't know. But I've never seen any spam on the one account. The other account was used for multiple purposes, so the little spam I've seen could come from a number of sources. Anyway, at least your spam has slowed, right??

PS. I guess one of the things to specifically point out re: these cards (as long as you already have an account), is you add them to that account, instead of creating a new one. It works great... Plus if you have downloads from multiple sources (i.e.: the 15 per month from the mp3 player subscription, and these 65-song "starter kits"), they automatically handle it so that your downloads come from the pool that expires first. It works out really slick... especially since I too have the 15-song things that pop up each month and I inter-splice these big cards in there. It always uses the ones most likely to expire.....

For anyone who got in on this deal, as the poster of this deal, I feel obligated to relay my latest experience...

I managed to pick up a few of these at my local CC. I used a couple of them, and just went in to do another one this evening... For the first time in my experience, the code was rejected - "that code is expired", or something to that effect...

So, I tried with two additional cards. And got the same result. I presume it is because the cards "expired on 4/1/08" and now that it's 10/1/08 in some places, they've expired.... I guess they have a +6-month lifespan.

In any case, any of these that were purchased at CC about the time of this deal are still within the 30 days of the return policy for Circuit City.

Not the way I wanted this to go, but I did manage to use a couple of them, so as long as I get the rest of these refunded (which I should), it'll end up being fine. I guess I'm glad I tried one out tonight and found the unfortunate results. Although, of course, I wish I'd done a couple last night so I'd have gotten a few more downloads to work....

Oh well.

Good luck all.

Well, all went well for me... kudos to Circuit City - they took back my unused packages with minimal hassle.

I did get to use a few cards before they actually expired, so all in all this was a good deal, with minor rumblings which worked out ok in the end. While I'd have preferred to USE the music cards, I'm glad the unused ones expired now instead of a month on, when there'd have been little recourse.

Hopefully, any return experiences you must deal with go as smoothly as mine.

I gave the OP green on this even though I didn't see this thread until just now, when It's already dead, just because I appreciated his explanation of eMusic. I bought an MP3 player at CC some months ago (from a deal posted here, naturally) that came with X number of months (maybe a year) of 10 free downloads from this service. I don't remember exactly how long it was for because I found it hard to pull anything from there over an extended period of time that matched my tastes and that I didn't already have. That being said, the price is right and for some tastes, it's a good buy.
